SCHOOL HISTORY

Our lady Of Loretto Elementary School opened in 1911 and we intend to create a complete history on this page. We are working with several sources including the Archdiocese of Los Angeles archives office to gather all information available.

History of Our Lady of Loretto Elementary School

Our Lady of Loretto Elementary school was first opened to receive students in 1911. The school was housed in a building about a block from its current location on North Union Avenue in the Echo Park area of Los Angeles. This original school house was enlarged in 1914.

In 1921, the Sisters of the Presentation took over the staffing of the school and in the same year a six classroom building was erected at the present location of the school. In 1928 the first major expansion to this new school building was completed.

The Sisters of the Presentation taught at Our Lady of Loretto Elementary School until August of 1974 when they were forced to make the decision to withdraw from staffing the school due to funding and personnel shortages. (Much more to come in regards to the Sisters of the Presentation's role in the history of OLL).

In September of 1974 The Eucharistic Missionary Sisters took on the role of staffing the school but a decision was made to immediately cut the school back to grades 1-6 as opposed to grades 1-8 as it was prior to 1974. The children in grades 7 and 8 were transferred to Queen of Angels Elementary School to finish off their Elementary School education. Miss Flavia Lopez was appointed Principal of Our Lady of Loretto in 1974 (a position she would hold for an amazing 28 years). Also joining the Principal in the new setup were Miss Hermelinda Oliveras (Vice Principal) and Miss Maria Concepcion Castillo (Religious Coordinator).

In September 1977 the school added a 7th grade curriculum back into the school agenda and in 1978 Loretto was returned to it's customary grades 1-8. Further development took place in 1980 when a kindergarten class was opened and that Kindergarten through 8th Grade elementary school education format is still in place to this day.

Since 1985 the faculty of OLL has been lay teachers and administrators.

In 2003 Miss Flavia Lopez retired after an amazing 28 years as Principal of Our Lady of Loretto Elementary School. Easily the longest serving faculty member in the school's history.

In September of 2003 Miss Fidela B. Suelto took over the reigns as Principal at OLL, joined by Mrs. Isabel Kuhn (Vice Principal) and Mr. Miguel A. Solis (Religion Coordinator) and former OLL Alumni of 1985 Mr.Carlos Loaiza. The school (since 1911) has faithfully and successfully served the community and watched literally thousands of students pass through its halls and preparing them for the big world beyond Our Lady of Loretto Elementary School.
